After playing at Perks & Corks in Westerly, RI a few months ago, I wasn’t sure what, if anything, would come next. And it stayed that way for a while. But a few weeks ago, I was invited to play at Notch Brewing in Allston, MA. The invitation was unexpected enough that I wondered at first if I was being scammed somehow. But it was legit and much appreciated. And now I have two more performances that I’m pleased to let you know about:
On Thursday, November 14, I’ll be playing a couple of songs at Askew in Providence, RI as part of the Sweet Little Variety Show. SLVS is a Rhode Island institution at this point, presenting “a monthly feminist, anti-racist, queer-positive, and body-positive cabaret” since 2010. I last played a SLVS about a decade or so ago, and I’m delighted to have been invited back. The show will start at 8pm.
About a month later, on Friday, December 13, I’ll be playing a show with Rachel Sumner at Lilypad in Cambridge, MA. In the past few months alone, Rachel has won the prestigious Kerrville New Folk competition; made it onto the ballot for the first round of Grammy voting; and performed at the Library of Congress. I, meanwhile, have won a vinyl copy of a Cat Power record from an online raffle; watched the Grammys; and checked out several books from our local library. So why is this a co-bill? Because Rachel is a very generous partner. I hope you’ll join us. I’ll be playing mostly (entirely?) new material, but give a shout if there’s an old one you want to hear and I’ll see if I can remember it (but no promises….). This show will start at 7:15pm.
If all goes well, I may have a few more music-related things to share in the coming weeks and months. If this keeps up, I might even stop fearing instinctively each time a performance opportunity comes up that I’m being scammed. (Please don’t scam me.) If the idea of hearing me play or of hearing new music from me is appealing to you: Thank you.
A couple more things: If I happen not to get the message out here when something new comes up, I will probably at least manage to post something on Instagram.
And something not about me (finally): I strongly recommend checking out Liv Greene’s new album, Deep Feeler. The album was recorded at Woodland Studios (Gillian Welch and David Rawlings’s place) and features some heavy-hitters, but all of that is secondary to Liv’s songs. I’d heard and admired most of them from seeing Liv play live over the past couple of years, and I’ve worried in the past (often justifiably) that the recordings of songs I’ve heard live will not live up to those performances. Thankfully, that’s not at all the case here: this album delivers beautifully.

Can’t wait to hear new stuff from you! The world is a better place when you are releasing music into it.
